Spacecraft to be fired at asteroid in test to save Earth - rumours of comet collision denied

A spacecraft will be fired into an asteroid to prepare for one being on a collision course with Earth, according to the Telegraph.

The European Space Agency will attempt to push an asteroid off course and collect data.

The news comes as NASA denies claims that comet Elenin, found last December, is on course to hit Earth.

Rumours have been sweeping the web that the comet will plunge the Earth into darkness, or, indeed, smash into the planet.
