Japan earthquake: vibrations nearly reached space

Vibrations from the earthquake that devastated Japan in March were so powerful that they almost reach space, according to a National Geographic report.

Vertical motion from the ground shaking and the swelling tsunami produced vibrations that pressed up against the air.

The process is well known from other quakes, but the Japan disaster caused the biggest effect to measured.
