Man punches alligator in head to save pet dog from death - Florida, USA

A PENSIONER jumped on to the back of a 6ft alligator and punched it in the head to save his West Highland terrier from the jaws of death.

Gary Murphy, 72, was on a boat near marshland on the Port St Lucie River in Palm City, about 80 miles from Miami, Florida, USA, when the gator attacked Doogie the dog.

'I wasn't trying to be a hero. I just wanted my dog back,' says Gary.

Alligators are only native to the United States and China. Every year, about 20 dogs are killed by the reptiles in Florida and seven humans are attacked.

BEWARE: Experts warn that it is the mating season and the beasts are more active.
